In RH's & MP's batch this non-professional secretary-influenced hand occurs only in two related depositions, one written in defence of Mary Easty and Sarah Cloyce (ecca1296), the other of Mary Easty (ecca1289). The names of the defendants and some personal pronouns notwithstanding, the wording of the two documents is identical. The erasure of "tham" (corrected to "hure") and "thare" (corrected to "that hure") in ecca1289 suggests that it was copied from ecca1296 and the scribe first accidentally produced the plural forms of the pronouns. The scribe’s comment "this is a truee cope" in ecca1296 and the appearance of John and Mary Arnold's 'signatures' in the main hand of the deposition could mean that there once existed an original version with the marks of John and Mary Arnold (cf. ecca1289). Another possibility is that this hand belongs to John Arnold who also signed the document for his wife. |
